I have been lucky to fuse my passion for travel with my studies, jobs, and research. I have had the fortune to travel through 43 countries, some of them for field research or work. I have conducted field research in the United States, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Chile. Before entering the Ph.D. program in Pittsburgh, I worked for six-and-a-half years as a journalist in Chile and Spain. That experience allowed me to cover political events in Chile, Spain, Argentina, Belgium, Haiti, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. As special envoy or correspondent I mainly covered elections, but also the downfall of a government, hydrocarbon nationalizations, and events that led to democratic progresses and setbacks.

One of the most interesting aspects of being a journalist was to meet and interview people from diverse origins. From presidents (e.g., Hugo Chávez, Alejandro Toledo, Alfredo Palacio, Eduardo Rodríguez) to renowned scholars and intellectuals (e.g., Niall Fergusson, Ken Follet, Tariq Ramadan) to diplomats (e.g, Hans Blix) to royal family members (e.g., King Felipe of Spain) and all sorts of less-known, but no less interesting people. The interaction with influential politicians helped to persuade me that the behavior of people in positions of exceptional power has consequences that are commonly overlooked or misunderstood. That explains my long-term interest in studying how the individual differences of heads of governments influence executive governance.

The map has links to most of the articles that I published in the newspapers El Mercurio (499), ABC (15), and the magazine Ercilla (2) between 2002 and 2008. Most of the articles are about international political events. If you click on a blue circle over a country, you will see a list of the articles I published for that country. If you click once on the titles, you will access a PDF version of the article. Close to the center of the map you will find the blue circles for broad categories, including a few columns I have written, and articles about global affairs, Latin America, and the European Union.
